Area-Wide Power Outage Hits Juneau

Power went out across Juneau lunchtime Tuesday.

Power was initially lost in parts of Juneau Tuesday morning at 11:53:06am due to a problem with the power supply from the Snettisham hydro-electric plant. The cause of the initial outage is unknown at this time.

Parts of town remained online receiving power from Lake Dorothy until about 12:12pm when the supply from the new hydro plant was lost and rest of the system went down extending the outage to area-wide.

As of 1pm, AEL&P had restored power to most areas of the town, with the first areas first coming online around 12:25pm, using diesel backup generators. AEL&P was working to restore the supply from Lake Dorothy to start shifting back to hydro power. The status of the Snettisham line was still unknown.

AEL&P later reported that they suspected the wind caused cables on the Snettisham line to touch causing a short circuit.
