Eaglecrest opening Saturday December 18th

KATH-TV received the following from Eaglecrest Friday afternoon:

Eaglecrest Ski Area will open for the 2010-2011 season on Saturday morning, with the Black Bear Chair operating from 9:00am to 2:30 pm; and the Hooter Chair and the Porcupine Chair open from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

As of Friday, December 17 there were 26" of snow at the Day Lodge and 62" at the top. Even with 62" on the top of the mountain, the Ptarmigan chair has less than a foot of snow at the unloading ramp (due to wind scour) and will not operate this weekend. The west side of the mountain will be signed for expert skiers and riders only. The only access to the west side will be through the gates located at the Eagles Nest. Skiers and riders may enter these gates by walking up the Ptarmigan access road.

"We are happy that we are opening but realize that we have very low snow coverage. The snow cats have been using compactor bars rather than the tillers that we usually use due to lack of snow depth. Skiers and riders will notice a difference in the snow surface where the snow cats have operated. Packed runs will include Williwaw, Sneaky, Sourdough, Muskeg & Dolly Varden. Snowmaking has provided coverage for the Porcupine learning area. Snowsports School will be offering lessons and the rental shop will be open. The ski patrol has suggested that we let people know that there is extremely thin coverage Bring your rock skis and rock snowboards and be aware that conditions require that you ski and ride more cautiously than you normally would" Kirk Duncan said, Eaglecrest general manager. "This will be a great weekend to come up and take a few runs, get your winter legs back and enjoy a burger at the Eaglecrest Grill".

The area will be open daily through Monday, January 3; however will be closed on Christmas Day, December 25. The Snow Bus will operate the weekend/holiday schedule. Visit skijuneau.com for bus schedule and the latest conditions.
