Santa to visit Juneau on a fire truck twice this weekend

Every year, a few days before Christmas, Santa makes a very special visit to Juneau as he checks his lists of kids. Part of that visit involves catching a ride on a fire truck with his friends at the Juneau Fire department. Though he doesn't give out presents until Christmas, he is known for distributing over 900 candy canes in the downtown area alone.

Beth Weldon is a Division Chief with Capital City Fire and Rescue, she told us about the plans for the visit: "Santa likes firefighters, so he comes and visits us every year, and this year he's going to visit us this Friday. And he's going to be in the downtown area first and his helpers are going to start at 6:30pm on Friday, and they'll start at the Tram and work their way through downtown, go up Franklin, across 4th, down Calhoun, and then down 12th Street to Glacier Avenue, up in the Highlands and Behrends Avenue after that, and then looping back to Glacier. At about 7:45, around that time, he and his helpers will cross the bridge and go into Douglas and hit the neighborhoods in Douglas."

But Santa isn't done after just one visit, he'll take a break and be back Sunday according to Weldon: "And then on Sunday he'll be back to visit us again, first of all at the open house at the Auke Bay station from 1 to 3 where they'll be giving out cookies, and also have Chief Etheridge come in and read stories to the kids, and other firefighters will read stories. And then Santa will get on the fire truck about 4:30 and start the route of Back Loop, and he'll go from the Auke Bay station down the back loop, starting first at the Wren Drive & Steelhead Drive subdivision, going to the Ninnis subdivision, and then back along Back Loop and hit the All Seasons subdivision before he heads back to Auke Bay station.

So all along the way, both ways, he'll be handing out candy canes for the kids and it should be a good time."
