Eaglecrest master plan sets goals for ski area's future Published: 03/30/2012 00:54:00  VIDEO: Southeast Spotlight Report: Eaglecrest master plan sets goals for ski area's future (Image: Mikko Wilson / KATH-TV) Related: Eaglecrest opens early for the 2011-2012 ski season Eaglecrest Ski Area prepares for winter with new chairlift Eaglecrest improvements add capacity and green energy Jim Calvin, one of the leads on the project with the McDowell Group told us about the plan: "The master plan is a long term planning effort looking out 20 years and we've identified a broad range of summertime development opportunities, including trails for hiking and biking, we're looking at various lodging development opportunities, hostels and other sort of low-cost lodging facilities. We're looking at various things to do in the winter time to enhance winter time opportunities. So this is a plan that looked at a broad range of opportunities, gauged public support for these kinds of development opportunities, and then laid out in great detail for the board of directors to use as they consider how to priorities the many development opportunities that are in front of Eaglecrest over the next 20 years." The plan itself isn't a decision to move forward on any projects, but rather a prioritized list of ideas; a large number of which come from the public. Through a mixture of focus groups, online and telephone surveys, and public feedback sessions like one held last night at city hall; the publically owned ski area will have a plan that caters best it can to the residents of Juneau. Eaglecrest General Manager Matt Lillard was pleased with the results of the public feedback. "I think they are really looking to see, to move forward, to continue to be a great asset to the community and be really a place for them to go and get away from all the hustle and bustle that downtown Juneau can be in the summer and get out into nature and enjoy what winter can be here. So I think the general feeling is people want to keep that special quality about Eaglecrest as kind of their asset and their facility to use, and I think that's great. I think it's going to enable us to move forward and make sure we keep those ideals in mind of a place to get away from it all; whether you're skiing, hiking, walking around, just checking out nature; it's a great place to do that" he said.
