Moving Vietnam Wall memorial visits Juneau

This week, a half scale replica of the Washington DC Vietnam Veterans Memorial, known as the Moving Wall, is in Juneau at the Vintage Park business center. We attended a remembrance and wreath laying ceremony at the wall on Wednesday.

State senator Dennis Egan spoke first about the wall: "The names listed on the wall are the names of members who died or went missing in action during the Vietnam War. It is estimated that the wall would have to be tripled to include the names of veterans who died as a result of exposure to Agent Orange and post traumatic stress."

Reverend Patrick Casey then gave an invocation. "Today we gather together to give thanks to almighty God for those who laid down their lives, not for any cause but for the cause of freedom. They came together, young men, boys, of 18 years of age and up. They did not know, more or less, what they were getting into."

The ceremony included the laying of wreathes at the wall, as is done every year at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington.

"We pray then also for these young men and women who gave their life, that they not be forgotten. We continue to remember them, and remember those who are dying for the cause of freedom today" said Casey.

The Moving Wall will be in Juneau until Monday, after which it will travel to Haines, and then interior Alaska. Wednesday's ceremony will be broadcast in its entirely on KATH TV at 3pm on Wednesday May 30th.
