Census day 2010 promoted in Juneau at "March to the Mailbox" event Published: 04/01/2010 18:30:00  VIDEO: April 1st, is census day. Every ten years, the US Census Bureau counts every person in the United States. (Image: Mikko Wilson / KATH-TV)  The March To The Mailbox event was held April 1 at the State Office Building (Mikko Wilson / KATH-TV)  April 1 is officially US Census day (Mikko Wilson / KATH-TV) Today at noon, Census workers and other government representatives were on hand at the State Office Building as part of a statewide rally known as “March to the Mailbox” to remind people to fill out and return their Census forms. Katherine Eldemar, Co-chair of the Complete Count Committee, explained how simple it is to participate: “It’s 10 minutes, 10 questions, and we encourage you to take the time and fill it out.” Even though today is officially Census day, there isn’t a formal deadline. Most people have already received their census forms. If you haven’t received yours yet, the forms are available from various locations around Juneau. The locations are: Safeway • Mondays & Tuesdays: 11am-4pm • Wednesdays: 4:30pm-9:30pm Juneau Alaskan and Proud • Mondays, Thursdays & Fridays: 5pm-8pm • Saturdays & Sundays: 1pm-4pm Central Council Tlingit-Haida downtown ANB Hall • Tuesdays: 7:30pm-10:30pm • Wednesdays: 8:30pm-10:30pm • Saturdays: 5:30pm-10:30pm • Sundays: 2:30pm-5pm Nugget Mall • Mondays & Fridays: 5pm-8pm • Saturdays & Sundays: 1pm-4pm “Don’t feel like the deadline has passed, grab your census forms, again if you haven’t received the form, you can contact any one of those locations and you should be able to retrieve a form so you can fill that out directly.” Eldemar said. Juneau Mayor Bruce Botelho told us what the Census means for Juneau: “I think fundamentally, it’s a patriotic duty. The census is the building block for our representative democracy. That is how representatives are, first of all, determined for the US House of Representatives. It appears in article 1 of the US Constitution, it’s included in our own State Constitution. And really, to the extent that one believes in the principle of ‘one person, one vote’, the census is the basis upon which that determination is made.
